Peer-run respites are voluntary, short-term, overnight programs offering community-based, non-clinical support in a homelike setting. Open 24/7, these spaces provide an environment where individuals can reflect, connect, and find ways to move forward with the help of peer support.
Designed as alternatives to traditional crisis services, peer-run respites provide recovery education and support aimed to reduce the need for clinical interventions by offering a less intrusive, more empowering approach to crisis supports.
Peer-run respites are entirely staffed and managed by individuals with lived experiences. Leadership roles and governance structures are predominantly held by those who share these experiences, ensuring empathy and understanding are at the heart of the program.
Guests are supported through mutual, trusting relationships with peer staff. These interactions emphasize respect, shared responsibility, and advocacy, helping individuals foster connections and gain tools for personal growth and community participation.
Peer-run respites are short-term, voluntary stays for individuals age 18 and up in safe, supportive homes staffed entirely by individuals with lived experience. These spaces offer non-judgmental support, genuine connection, and an opportunity to reflect and recharge during difficult times.
If a respite stay isn’t accessible, our Mobile Peer Respite team can visit you at home or meet in a safe community space—providing flexible, trauma-informed support wherever you are.
Kiva Centers offers educational opportunities such as creating your own personal Wellness Recovery Action Plan, as well as trainings on self-compassion, living with suicidal thoughts, thriving after trauma, peer support and CPS to support personal growth, peer leadership and ongoing healing.
