A safe space for rest, reflection, and education.

Respite Request Form

Peer-run respites are voluntary, short-term stays in a homelike setting designed to provide support through genuine understanding relationships. Staffed by Peer Respite Advocates with lived experiences, peer-run respites offer a non-judgmental space where guests can recharge, reflect, and take steps forward in their personal journey.

Kiva Centers’ Peer-Run Respites provide peaceful, homelike spaces for individuals seeking rest and support.  These spaces offer understanding, connection, and opportunities for reflection. Mobile Peer Respite teams also provide flexible support across Massachusetts.

Kiva Centers holds the statewide contract on Certified Peer Specialist training.  We also have multiple other educational opportunities, such as WRAP and TIPS.

What are peer-run respites?

Peer-run respites are voluntary, short-term, overnight programs offering community-based, non-clinical support in a homelike setting.  With round-the-clock supervision, these spaces provide an environment where individuals can reflect, connect, and find ways to move forward with the help of peer support.

Staff and leadership
Peer-run respites are entirely staffed and managed by individuals with lived experiences.  Leadership roles and governance structures are predominantly held by those who share these experiences, ensuring empathy and understanding are at the heart of the program.
Purpose
Designed as alternatives to traditional crisis services, peer-run respites aim to reduce the need for clinical interventions by offering a less intrusive, more empowering approach to support.
How they work
Guests are supported through mutual, trusting relationships with peer staff.  These interactions emphasize respect, shared responsibility, and advocacy, helping individuals foster connections and gain tools for personal growth and community participation.
